Last month, the selected DMS startups were exposed to basic General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) principles via a webinar given by Rigo Wenning, ERCIM legal counsel with more than 20 years of experience in data protection.

The presentation gave an introduction to protection laws and explains the difference between privacy and data protection. GDPR applies since 25 May 2018 and is seen as a game changer. There is one set of data protection rules for all companies operating in the EU, wherever they are based. Stronger rules and higher fines on data protection mean higher risk for infringing business practices. People have more control over their personal data. But businesses benefit from a level playing field and the presentation also shows that not everything done with personal data needs consent.

This presentation has set the basic knowledge level for the exploration of data protection strategies and solutions for startups.

On the basis of making privacy by design, existing solutions include techniques like k-anonymity and differential privacy, how to get people to consent and how to subsequently teach systems to deal with data protection constraints. Ultimately, the creation of intelligent data lakes and the trust and competitive advantages that come with them.
